John and I finally got on the water for his full day. It was a cool day hovering around 50 degrees under cloudy skies. John retired and now he has taken up fly fishing. He wanted me to teach him as much as I could. He took a casting lesson and that was fine. The water took a quick temperature drop. It was 46 degrees, stained and 1.1’ in flow. Around 10AM plenty of mayflies were hatching, but nothing taking off the surface. I started with nymphing set-ups and techniques. As he became comfortable with a fishing technique, I moved to another. Just before lunch we did some dry/dropper fishing. John missed a few, had lost two small browns and a rainbow plus we put 1 in the net. John and I broke for lunch around 1PM. We talked about all we did. Then he said, you know, I learn so much, I just want to work on these things and come back. So, I showed him a few other places to park. It was a fun time with such a wonderful guy to be on the water with.
