Big Springs/Yellow Breeches, 04/21/26

I had such a great time with Brad today. Brad wanted two things out of today. Frist, learn how to catch Big Springs trout and Second, find new water on the breeches. We had plenty of time. It was a darn cold 29 degree start on Big Springs. We fished from 7:30AM until 11:30AM. The water looked slightly low, no bugs and a surprising 48 degrees. Long story short. I found my fly fishing twin. He set up to mono fish so I’m thinking Euro leader. Nope, what I call “Redneck” mono. Good old mono, to a sighter and then long tippet to top and bottom flies. Love it, go fish. Started up through some riffles and he missed a few and had a mid-size rainbow on. Then, I said I want to show you how I stalk, sight and catch these finicky trout. We did just that and then I told him this is where it takes practice and a quick set. Forget sighter. Look at the trout, a head turn or an opening of the mouth, “Set”. Well, would you not know it, he rolled a big 18 inch rainbow. So, successful start.

Off to the Breeches, where the sunny skies warmed up to a pleasant 57 degrees. The water was clear, a little low and nothing hatching. I showed Brad several different spots and we had time to fish from noon to 3:30. Rechanged the nymphs and we set off. I’m gonna have to write an article and entitle it “Redneck Trouting”. Brad missed 2 and landed 2 beautiful browns and a rainbow. He was so glad we finally got on the water together and looking to come back to my private water this fall.
