Today I met with Mike at Mount Holly Precision Fly and Tackle at 8 a.m. for a full day on the water. Mike is new to fly fishing and was interested in learning as much as possible about fly fishing on this trip. We started out on the Yellow Breeches. Low and clear made for tough conditions. Spooked what trout we had found and saw some rather large wild and holdover trout in unexpected places hard to sneak into. Though we came up empty handed with trout we did get some fall fish by accident. We then took lunch and after moved to Mountain Creek where we shortly shot 1 small wild brown out of the riffles on a hook set. We then found out there was an unexpected competition and our water had been pounded earlier in the day. On the look for a section that maybe wasn’t fished so hard we found a spot and with a zug bug and caddis double nymph rig we started to get some trout to eat. 6 or so takes in 1 pocket. Some were missed, 2 on the hook that were able to get slack and come off. 1 about 6”-8” and the other close to 14” and it put up a strong fight giving both of our adrenaline a little spike after how hard we worked. Mike was excited to have learned as much as he did and had enough confidence to say he will likely be putting what he learned today to use on his home waters tomorrow or as soon as possible.
