Antietam/Red Run, 04/21/24-04/22/24

I just spent the last day and 1/2 half with my good friend James and his lovely new wife Lori. They spent two night in the farmhouse which overlooks the stream. Lori said to me, “ Will you sell this to me”. Yes, it is that beautiful. Lori had never fished in her lifetime and this was the honeymoon they wanted. Fisher came down the first day to be with James so I could be with Lori and get her rolling. I got her casting OK, but we kept going forward. The weather is a bitter sweet blessing. The cold snap has really cooled off the water. It was clear to stained and was 51 to 49 degrees. We did see some caddis and craneflies as a few rising trout. Tuesday we did see more rising trout come mid-morning. We pretty much stuck with double nymph set-ups off indicators and tossed some streamers around. I did a lot of nymph changes, but despite the cold conditions the two streams did not disappoint. This is a world class fishery. We landed over 30 trout and this did not include what was missed and lost. Pulled in a trout that would barely fit in the net and plenty of 14-17 inch class wild rainbows. Summer dates are slim, but plenty of late August-September dates for the start of the big brown trout run!
